Abstract

This paper describes an interactive language learning application employing natural language processing (NLP) technology to make reading an active and an interactive process. The application called SMARTREADER is envisioned to run on tablet-PC or future e-book hardware platforms. By using NLP technology, SMARTREADER provides access to extra-textual information to help the reader with the comprehension of the text. The current application of SMARTREADER is for improving the learning experience of advanced learners of English, who, with a working knowledge of the grammar of the language, can read an advanced text, with the SMARTREADER providing access to lexical resources, extracting additional useful information like summaries and concordances. © Springer-Verlag 004.
