Abstract

Recently, facial volume enhancement has been recognized as an important component in overall facial rejuvenation. Gravitational descent is only one mechanism that contributes to the aging process. Many different techniques exist to augment facial volume. Besides temporary injectable fillers that are non-surgical in nature, safe, permanent options can be principally divided into facial fat enhancement and solid-implant insertion. This chapter will focus on an algorithm to help guide a surgeon in deciding when to use autologous fat transfer, solid implants, or a combination of both methods, to achieve ideal facial volume and harmony. © Springer-Verlag 2008.
