Abstract

The idea of recovering lost body functions by using available materials and technologies is documented even in antiquity. The ancient Egyptians used linen saturated with rubber as wound dressings, the Aztec civilisation used gold in dental fillings, Romans had urological catheters, while the first prosthetic hands, feet and legs appeared during the Renaissance. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.
