Abstract

The mossy fiber-CA3 projection is a hippocampal pathway that is well characterized anatomically (Claiborne et al., 1986; Amaral and Witter, 1989; Chicurel and Harris, 1992; Henze et al., 2000), yet the functional involvement of this pathway in synaptic plasticity and learning remain controversial. In this chapter we address several of these issues and review current findings regarding the role of the mossy fibers in hippocampal function.
