Abstract

In this chapter, instructions are provided on how to plan for a total diet study (TDS) and develop a procedures manual including key managerial, scientific and logistical considerations. A TDS procedures manual is a reference document which specifies the roles and responsibilities of all relevant personnel participating in the study. It includes detailed instructions for all aspects of the TDS sampling and analysis phase, including sampling and purchase instructions, recording of sample information, storage and transport requirements, and preparation of samples for laboratory analysis. A procedures manual ensures a consistent approach to the implementation of a TDS and is essential to ensure that the study is representative and reproducible.
