Abstract

The purposes of a surgical dressing when used to cover a wound are to control bleeding, absorb exudate, ease pain, protect against contamination, and promote healing. There is a lack of high-quality research evidence whether the choice of wound dressing or its length of use affects the rate of infections or other complications. Existing research has shown that using short dressing times not only reduces the number of nursing hours but also limits the need for costly dressing material. In addition, both wound observation and patients’ personal hygiene are made easier.
