Intermittent unexplained rectal bleeding in childhood

Abstract

Nine children between the ages of 4 to 13 yr were investigated for unexplained intermittent lower gastrointestinal bleeding. Barium contrast studies could indentify a filling difeet in only a single patient while in two out of nine patients, source of bleeding could be identified with the help of a signioidoscope. The colonoscopy was most helpful, lacalising the cause of lower gastrointestinal bleeding in two-thirds of the patients (6 out of 9). Five of these had juvenile polyps and in the remaining one child, non specific colitis was diagnosed. © 1983 Dr. K C Chaudhuri Foundation.
