Abstract

The primary objective of this study is to examine the relationship between academic performance and the increase of tuition subsidies for undergraduate students at a private higher education institution from Barranquilla (Colombia). Data are gathered and calibrated logarithmically by applying the statistical technique of discriminant analysis. Two mathematical functions are defined: F1 (paid on time) and F2 (paid late). The results show that 3.1% of F1 students and 4.7% of F2 students have low academic performance. This shows that the categorical dependent variable (payment of the semester) has a low impact on academic performance. It is concluded that educational institutions should make options available to all students equally to facilitate on-time payment of tuition fees by all students.
