Conceptual models of thermally induced valley winds are described. First, an account is given of Gill’s work on two-dimensional flow in a cavity with differentially heated sidewalls. Second, we focus on models of flow along heated (cooled) slopes. Third, we discuss in detail the work by Vergeiner and Brehm on cross-valley circulations. Finally, highly simplified models of three-dimensional valley flows are discussed and a novel approach to this problem is presented.
