Abstract

1-Methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline (1MeTIQ) demonstrates significant neuroprotective, antioxidant, and antidepressant-like activity in rodents. 1MeTIQ inhibits MAO-dependent dopamine oxidation as well as production of free radicals and shifts dopamine catabolism toward COMT-dependent O-methylation. Its antidepressant-like activity was demonstrated in several animal models of depression. The results can help to discover a new effective and safe antidepressant substance and may have important significance in the treatment of depression in clinic.
