Abstract

A pure bred 3 yr old male pointer developed a fatal hyperthermia during anesthesia for diagnostic purposes. The results of analyses of venous blood taken 10 min before death are listed. The increases in alkaline phosphatase, SGPT, SGOT, LDH, and serum K+ are similar to those reported to have occurred in malignant hyperthermia observed in man and swine. The Ca++ levels are far greater than those reported. The serum aldolase and CPK levels of the known living relatives of this patient were determined as a possible index of susceptibility to malignant hyperthermia. Based on these values, the littermate, female 1, could be considered susceptible to malignant hyperthermia and littermate, male 3, could be considered possibly susceptible.
