Abstract

The Indus River stretches over the whole span of Pakistan, from the mountains in the North to the Sea in the South. The river is diverted upstream for agricultural use, consequently a significant change is occurring in the delta which may lead to profound ecological and economic impacts. Various aspects of the reduction of the fresh water discharge and changing pattern of the delta and their hazards have been highlighted to delineate the gravity of the situation. These hazards can be reduced by allowing controlled flow throughout the year or through the conservation of the flood water to maintain the ecological conditions which exist today or even to some lower tolerable limit. -from Author
