Evacuation simulation was conducted by Cellular Automata in which the local neighbor and state transition rules for movement of pedestrians were satisfied with the occupancy density-flow rate diagram proposed in the Public Guideline for evacuation. As case studies of the proposed algorithm, evacuation from a room with several exits, from three rooms connected to a pathway and a stairway were simulated. The simulation results were compared with the estimated evacuation time calculated by flow rate, number of people, and width of the exits. The simulation results showed good agreement with the estimated evacuation time, and furthermore, it showed precise movement of each person to evacuate from rooms caused by the flow rate change in the process. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
