Abstract

Hoaxes are considered a serious problem in the digital era. The problems indicate lower levels of digital literacy. In Indonesia, data shows that the large number of Internet users in Indonesia, as well as their high frequency of accessing information content and social media, especially among millennials, is not followed by public awareness to use the internet wisely. In this regard, millennials stand out for their internet and social media use. Therefore, this study aims to determine the levels of digital literacy of the millennial generation in Surabaya in overcoming the spread of hoaxes. This study used quantitative research methods. The population and sample in this study were the millennial generation aged 15 to 19 years. The results showed that the levels of digital literacy of the millennial generation in Surabaya generally fell into low index category. The highest component was shown by the ability to understand, with a digital literacy index score of 46.8%, which belonged to the medium category. The lowest component was indicated by the ability to collaborate, with a digital literacy index score of 32.2%. This research provided recommendation to policy makers as initial data screening related to digital literacy levels
