Abstract

This volume deals with the basic aspects of anesthesia, intensive care and pain in neonates and children. The topics covered include anatomy and physiology, strategies that can be applied to the treatment of these patients, and the use of "off-label" pharmacological agents in pediatric perioperative medicine. Internationally recognized guidelines aimed at standardizing the most important procedures, such as the treatment of hypothermia, central venous catheterization techniques and prevention of catheter-induced infections are also discussed. The last part of the book is focused more on clinical and technical aspects of anesthesia induction and monitoring. The book will be a useful update for neonatologists, pediatricians and anesthesiologists in their clinical practice, and an educational tool for residents in these fields Highlights -- Anatomy and Physiology in Neonates and Children -- Strategy to Manage Pediatric Patients: the Family and the Child -- Off-Label Drugs in Pediatric Perioperative Medicine -- Guidelines and Standardization of Procedures -- The Pediatric Difficult Airway -- Central Venous Cannulation Techniques -- Prevention of Bloodstream Infections -- Perioperative Medicine, Intensive Care, Pain -- Preoperative Evaluation -- Anesthesia Induction -- Monitoring the Level of Anesthesia and Sedation in Children -- An Overview -- Locoregional Anesthesia in Children -- Perioperative Fluid Management -- Adrenal Insufficiency in Pediatric Critical Illness -- Perioperative Care in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery -- Acute Pain Service: Clinical Assessment and Standard of Care -- Anesthesia Outside the Operating Room -- Tracheotomy in Children -- Infection Control in Neonates and Children -- Pediatric Palliative Care in the Intensive Care Unit -- Chronic Pain Management: Organization, Techniques and Guidelines.
