Abstract

Narrowing of the spinal canal was first described by Portal in 1803 [74]. However, Verbiest was the first to describe the clinical symptom of neurogenic claudication as a result of spinal canal stenosis and established this pathology as a clinical entity in the 1950s [97]. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
