Abstract

Remote sensing data contribute efficiently to a better knowledge of oceanographic processes. Surface features, but also the internal dynamics which induce surface signatures, may be revealed by use of some remote sensing techniques. In 1986, the authors proposed to Gibraltar Experiment colleagues to undertake a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) survey of the Strait of Gibraltar during 2 successive tidal cycles at Springs (June 22 and 24, 1986). The aim was to obtain a synoptic view of the Strait to emphasize characteristic surface features related to the well known generation of internal waves at the Camarinal Sill at each tidal cycle and their eastward propagation during the ebb phase of the tide. -from Authors
