Abstract

In 1987 and 1988, I held a temporary position as senior adviser in the research department of the International Monetary Fund. The big issue at the time was the Latin American debt crisis. I chose to analyse proposals for debt relief and did a thorough analysis of an international debt facility proposal. My analysis was eventually published in the Fund’s journal, the Staff Papers. I learnt a lot about the Fund and was impressed by the quality of the staff. The debt crisis actually ended with the “Brady Plan”, fostered by the USA.
