A novel user-centred approach to evaluation of semantic knowledge management applications is described. Application of the approach to two case studies-fully functional prototypes for digital library users, and support for legal decision making-is discussed. The results show that users appreciate the enhancement to their working environment provided by semantic technology, improving both the efficiency of work, and the quality of the result. Estimation of cost and benefits Indicates that semantic knowledge management systems can be highly cost-effective for large and medium-size organizations. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.
