Recent progress on the use of hypervalent iodine reagents for theconstruction of heteroatom-heteroatom bonds is reviewed. Reactionsof aryl-lambda(3)-iodanes with heteroatom substrates derived fromthird-row elements and beyond are considered first, and in unusualexample of heteroatom-heteroatom bond formation with diaryliodoniumsalts is then discussed. Finally, the use of sulfonylimino(aryl)iodanesfor imidations of phosphorus, sulfur, selenium, and arsenic compounds, including enantioselective transformations (S,Se), and alternatehypervalent iodine approaches to N-sulfonylsulfilimines and N-sulfonylarsiniminesare summarized.
