The present article proposes a typology of non-traditional students based on the most relevant findings in our context. Secondly, it is analysed the relationship between non-traditional students and dropout and the influence of the academic achievement in this relationship. A cohort of freshmen (n=6367) enrolling in the University Autonomous of Barcelona (UAB) is examined. Chi-square analysis and adjusted standardised residuals were undertaken. It is concluded that non-traditional students tend to drop out more frequently than their traditional counterparts even when they have good performance.
