As wireless and mobile computing technologies start to penetrate every comer of our life, highly anticipated smart spaces are becoming a reality. Recently, OSGi has proven quite successful in enabling collaboration and interaction among entities within a single space. However, distributed collaboration over a wider area spanning multiple spaces will be more often required, as more spaces turns intelligent. This paper addresses the need of cross-space service discovery and interaction. Our approach is to utilize SLP protocol as a means to bridge isolated OSGi islands together. We have validated our architectural design through prototype implementations and a comparative evaluation study. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.
