Abstract

The skin irritating effect of various compounds was examined and the following results were obtained. 1) Alcohols and esters are, in general, non-irritating effect. Acids, lactones and phenols have a slight irritating effect. Aldehydes are strongly irritating and halogen compounds have also a strong irritating action. 2) The greater the degree of unsaturation, the stronger is the irritating effect. Double bond compounds, especially, have a strong irritating action. 3) Ketones are slightly irritating but those which are readily enolized have a strong irritating action. 4) The irritability of aromatic aldehydes differs according to the type and position of the substituting radical. 5) Water soluble but fat insoluble and water insoluble compounds are non-irritating. Skin irritants have the property of being both water and fat soluble in a certain ratio. © 1962, Meeting of Osaka Dermatological Association. All rights reserved.
