Abstract

Creating a common language for surgeons to discuss ventral hernias, including the techniques for repair and outcomes, can enhance overall knowledge of the disease process and improve care for patients. Many attempts have been made at defining a classification system including those brought forward by the European Hernia Society, Ventral Hernia Working Group, Modified Ventral Hernia Working Group, and most recently the Ventral Hernia Staging System. This chapter discusses each of these classification systems including strengths and weaknesses. Most importantly, we utilize the Ventral Hernia Staging System to provide an overview of operative approaches for the management of all stages of ventral hernias.
