Managing Conflict in Africa: Workable Solutions and Recommendations

Abstract

Despite general assumptions, ethnic diversity is not the most significant factor contributing to identity-based conflict in Africa. Many ethnic groups live in peace through intermarriages, tolerance, and the sharing of resources. People do not kill each other just because of their differing identities. The most significant cause of identity-based conflict is when political elites use ethnicity as a means to political and economic power. The chapter draws attention to political solution including promoting democratic principles, developing capacity building measures at all levels, promoting grassroots courts, ensuring judicial accountability, implementing fair and transparent distribution of economic resources, developing regional conflict resolution strategy, and implementing inclusive and responsible governance system.
