Dealing with diversity in police services

Abstract

The chapter aims to explore the term ‘diversity’ in the context of today’s policing and try to come up with some answers. Citing personal experiences, the author argues that the overwhelming majority (of the majority) are genuine upright individuals. And yet we see contradictions since the treatment of BME personnel does not consistently match the overt majority ideals. The chapter concludes that in the final analysis, policing appears to be heavily populated by values underpinned in conservatism - a political philosophy or attitude emphasizing respect for traditional institutions, distrust of government activism and opposition to sudden change in the established order.
