Abstract

The fire service needs a new station and it should be located optimally with respect to the houses served by it. The quality of the location is measured by the maximum of the distances to the relevant houses, and this greatest distance should obviously be as short as possible. The author shows how the solution is developed, and in so doing he explains how randomized algorithms work. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
