The recruitment and commitment of voluntary board members of sport clubs are reported as a growing problem. Some sport clubs report that the recruitment and commitment of board members is existence-threatening. Little is known why some sport clubs perceive this problem as a challenge for their existence and others do not — even if the extent of the problem is reported equal. This article provides a theory-based model grounded on a survey of several sport clubs of the “Sportbund Rheinland” (n = 770). The model has explanatory power for the perceived problem recruiting of board members but not for the real numbers of vacancies. The difference between the number of vacancies and the perceived problem in the recruitment of board members is explained by the expected return from the drawn attention generated by the reporting board members. This explanation is supported by the findings that there are no significant differences between the reports of board members who perceive the problem existence challenging for their sport club and those who do not.
