A 57-year-old man presented with high fever and diarrhea. A blood culture revealed the presence of a Group C nontyphoidal Salmonella (NTS) isolate. On Salmonella serotyping, the isolate was identified as Salmonella enterica serovar Virchow. Its sequence type was determined to be ST16 by sequence analysis of 7 different housekeeping genes. The bla group 1 and bla genes were amplified CTX-M TEM using multiplex PCR assay for detecting extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL) genes. Sequences of both amplicons were respectively identical to CTX-M-15- and TEM-1-encoding genes. Since NTS is a cause of foodborne illness outbreaks in communities and an important cause of community-acquired bloodstream infection, clinicians should consider ESBL- or AmpC-producing NTS species in the differential diagnosis.
