Abstract

Fluid regulation for life and performance is examined in this chapter. First, however, the nature and function of water in human physiology as it pertains to maintaining fluid balance on a daily basis must be examined. The relation of water to human performance is also examined as the body's requirement for this fluid before, during, and after exercise is explored. In addition, other fluid sources, such as carbohydrate drinks, are examined for their efficacy, including specifically formulated beverages marketed for use during exercise. Finally, recommendations for application in the athletic environment are given. © 2008 Humana Press.
