1848 specimens were collected systematically from about 900 horizons in the loess profile of Xifeng, Gansu province, China. The magnetostratigraphy is established on the basis of the palaeomagnetic results after thermal cleaning, usually at 300°C. This result has been found to be generally consistent with previous work in Luochuan. The susceptibility varies regularly with the appearance of loess and palaeosol in the profile and thus could be used as a criterion to classify the loess and palaeosol sequence.
