Abstract

With the continuous development of e-learning environments, educational researchers strive to explain the key features of such contexts and find better ways to support diverse learners and instructors. The chapter begins with the review of an e-education model, which focuses on extended teaching and learning spaces in a virtual environment. Then, it discusses the recent studies on online learner competences, teachers’ understanding of instructional design strategies and pedagogical approaches to MOOCs and further analyses a spatiotemporal perspective in pursuit of refining the e-education model. The interconnectedness of space and time is emphasized in its critical role for successful online learning experiences. Implications for instructional design and suggestions for future research are presented in the conclusion.
