Abstract

The first part of this book consists of a basic introduction to the techniques, equipment and principles of tissue culture, with details of media and stages in micropropagation. Part II covers the callus and organ culture of African violets, lilies, snake plant (Sansevieria), strawberry, camellia, ferns (Nephrolepis), carrot, grasses, Begonia Xhiemalis and sweet potatoes. Part III deals with cell suspension cultures with examples relating to potato and carrot. The final two parts cover protoplast culture and preparation of specimens for light and electron microscopy. Useful tips on techniques and operation of equipment, such as laminar flow hoods, balances and filters, and addresses of suppliers are given in 18 appendices. A glossary of 90 tissue culture terms and a subject index are included. Much of the information should be of interest to plant scientists both inside and outside of horticulture.
