Abstract

On March 11, 2011, at 2:46 pm Japan standard time, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Honshu, Japan's main island, approximately 129 km east of Sendai. The earthquake and tsunami produced severe building damage and over 15,000 people were killed due to tsunami. This earthquake was later named "The 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake" by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). © Springer Japan 2012.
