Abstract
This article is the introduction to the surface science section of the fiftieth anniversary issue of the Journal of Vacuum Science and Technology. It highlights the role of AVS in the rise of surface science as an identifiable interdisciplinary research area and sets the context for the four articles in this section of the anniversary issue.
