Abstract

In this chapter, two theoretical approaches, namely Routine Activity Theory and the Situational Action Theory of Crime Causation will be explored with regard to their potential to enhance the understanding of elder abuse phenomena and to provide foundations for preventive approaches. Two major fields of elder abuse, financial exploitation of older persons (including deceptive offenses selectively targeted at the very old) and abuse and neglect in family caregiving, will be highlighted.
