Abstract

Nowadays, traffic is a big problem in modern world. The most frequent traffic jams occur at intersection controlled by traffic control. These traffic control are usually based on PLCs that control traffic without any feedback information on traffic density. Today, there is a need to use intelligent traffic control system that can monitoring traffic density at intersections. In this way load at intersections are significantly reduced. In this paper is proposed the smart traffic control system based on PLC. Designed system aims to give traffic lights a certain ‘intelligence’. This system uses motion sensors to monitoring the current state of the intersection with regard to the load. Based on that, designed system make decisions about the duration length of the red and green light. The purpose of designed system is to reduce waiting for pedestrians. For the smart traffic control system realization, the model of traffic intersection is created. The model is based on the real traffic control system that is applied in Bihac, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Siemens PLC is used for the designing smart traffic control system. The SCADA system is designed for control and monitoring. After designed of smart traffic control system the experimental analysis is performed. The results of the experimental analysis are shown and thoroughly analyzed.
