We report on two different optical parametric amplifier (OPA) schemes for the generation of few-optical-cycles pulses. Pulses with 180-THz bandwidth and 2-μJ energy are generated by a noncollinear OPA in the visible; a portion of the amplified pulse spectrum is compressed down to 7.2 fs using a thin prism sequence. IR pulses tunable from 1.1 to 2.6 μm with duration as short as 14.5 fs are achieved in a type-II OPA pumped by 780-nm, 18-fs pulses generated by a hollow-fiber compressor.
