Abstract

In the short period of time since Lyme disease was first described in the mid-1970∈s, it has rapidly become recognized as the most common vector-borne illness in the United States. In 1982, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) began surveillance of Lyme disease, and the CSTE (Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists) classified Lyme disease as a notifiable disease in 1990. © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2009.
