Abstract

Short metal-metal distances found in the rutile-type phases in the systems (Ti,V)Oa and (V,Mo )02 indicate the presence of bonds between the metal atoms. There is a close relation between the axial ratio of these compounds and the number of free valence electrons available per bond. A comparison is made with the bonds observed in the dioxides of Mo02 -type and in orthorhombic rhenium dioxide and also in some complex ions containing transition metals of valence numbers lower than their maximum ones.
