Abstract

The discovery, metabolism, compartmentation and ecology of caffeine and related purine alkaloids are reviewed. The plant species cultivated by humans in East and West and manufactured into pleasant "stimulants" such as coffee, cocoa, tea, cola, maté and guaraná are presented. Special emphasis was put on somatic embryogenesis in coffee, biodiversity in cocoa and seed dispersal in guaraná.
