Abstract

Brief note discusses the need for interaction of indigenous communities with the State for the successful management of tropical forests. The authors argue that one alternative would be to train village-based resource managers, who could use their knowledge and skills in forestry, ecology, ethnobotany " and others to help the local communities manage forests and interact with the state commercial markets and the global conservation community".
