A variety of mono- and polygenic cardiovascular diseases are potentially treatable with gene therapy. Extensive animal studies and initial human trials have confirmed that genes with therapeutic effects within the cardiovascular system may be introduced in vivo. Nevertheless, practical concerns relating to the achievement of safe, efficient, and long-lasting gene therapy continue to dominate the field. © 2006 Humana Press Inc.
