Abstract

This report aims to present a document by which two world experts and presidents of the World Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV), who visited to Chile in 1999, recommended to nominate the vineyards of the interior rainfed as World Heritage of UNESCO. This recommendation was not considered by the Chilean authorities. Two decades later, little progress is observed in this regard. The lack of pragmatism and excess bureaucracy, on the one hand, and the absence of a true awareness and appreciation of the wine heritage by the authorities and the big wine business community, have obstructed this path for Chilean wine, in its cultural and historical dimension. This document is published as a contribution to advance in the matter, urging the State of Chile to assume the process of applying for the recognition of the Cultural Landscape of wine in Chile, as a Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
