Abstract

This chapter considers the implementation of mental health promotion approaches within mental health services. An overview of interventions to reduce stigma and raise community awareness about mental health is provided, including some practical examples implemented in different countries. A number of evidence-based interventions are then described including the prevention of depression and early intervention programmes for psychosis and psychosis prevention, enhancement of social support for carers, psychoeducation for service users and families and psychosocial rehabilitation. The chapter concludes with a consideration of the principles of good practice in implementing mental health promotion within mental health services.
