The Cultural Humility in Pediatric Practice: Definitions and Recommendations chapter in Pediatric Psychiatry for Primary Care Providers: A Clinician Guide discusses the framework needed to deliver pediatric mental health care to diverse populations with cultural humility. Rather than attending to a mastery model of cultural competence, the importance of seeing cultural humility as a journey and not a destination is emphasized. Recognizing the multiple cultures at work in a medical setting, important areas for assessment, as well as specific strategies to provide more culturally relevant care in clinical practice is highlighted, with an emphasis on seeing every child and family as their own cultural entity.
