Abstract

The communication network is the key component of every parallel and distributed system. The trend of always aiming at bigger and more complex cores has shifted towards having many simpler cores, sharing yet another complex communication layer at the chip level. Moreover, advancements on scaling out at the cluster level have pushed communication and storage networks to new limits. All these technological opportunities bring out new and exciting research challenges. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
