Abstract

Cecostomy is a rarely used alternative for surgical decompression and venting of the colon in cases of cecal volvulus or Ogilvie syndrome (colonic pseudoobstruction). It is not a fecal diversion and has largely been superseded by other managements and techniques. This chapter details the indications, contraindications, pitfalls and danger points, surgical strategy, and technique for this procedure.
