The process of production of Brazilian urban space has presented segregation class aspects degradation of natural environment. It is observed in the country that the attractions of the site have become an important factor of urban expansion and that the settlement patterns in these spaces have been the main factors for of their transformation and destruction. This article aims at learning about the process of production and segregation of aurban protected area. The city of Pelotas, RS, is the case study. The expansion of the urbanized area from 1976 to 2012 was studied in maps, elaborated from aerial photographs and local research. The second and the third Masters Plans of the city were also taking into account. Two phenomena are observed in the area. On one hand, the segregation of the middle and high classes, on the other, the destruction of landscapes and biodiversity. The attractions of the site consist in a factor that whereas promoting the growth and segregation of middle and high classes, it is not an element for the preservation of these places. Thus, the mere specification of preservation areas in the law, in this case the Master Plan of the city, do not contribute for their preservation.
