The technique of patch testing is well established for diagnosing contact allergy. New allergens are continously identified, and the method itself is constantly developing. The outcome of patch testing depends on several factors including the knowledge and skill of the testing dermatologist. In the present chapter, we discuss the different aspects of patch testing ranging from test systems, allergens, evaluation, and relevance to strategies for including new allergens in baseline series and for the clinical investigation of patients. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
